Job Description - Shelter Director

Duties: Oversee operation of the House of Bread and Peace, Inc., reporting to the Board of Directors.

Environment: Emergency shelter for single women and women with children. Provides shelter and basic needs for 18-25 residents.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2 years’ experience, or commensurate experience in not-for-profit management, human services, or a related field.  Knowledge of the Evansville and Vanderburgh County community resources is preferred.
  • Written and verbal communications skills.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods, to climb stairs, and to carry items pertaining to the position.

 

Salary: Fulltime, $37,500 – $42,000 based on education and experience.

Benefits: Health insurance reimbursement, cellphone allowance.

Position Responsibilities:

House Management: Oversee daily operations of the House including resident care, home maintenance, food, supplies, and donations. Maintain good communication with shelter staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors, ensuring the Board and its committees have all information needed to make sound decisions. Maintain the integrity of the Mission Statement and House policies and procedures. Ensure that all House of Bread and Peace services are well designed and managed and are pursuant to a Board established plan. Develop programs and services to meet the needs of the organization and its residents. Maintain active User status in HMIS Client Track. Maintain the corporate website. Report to the Board of Directors at its regular monthly meetings.

Staff Supervision: Supervise staff and volunteers. Conducts regular staff meetings to review issues and upcoming events and resolve problems. Ensure the House is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Mediate disputes between staff, volunteers, and residents. Supervise student interns in accordance with institutional requirements. Coordinate volunteer programs and assignments.

Resource Development: Maintain positive relationships with donors through cheerful greetings at the House, mailings providing information, and thank you notes. Attend trainings required for grants and for general updated information on homelessness and poverty. Attend additional training and education as deemed appropriate and necessary. Oversee current grant funding and applications to new funding sources as available and appropriate. Complete necessary reports in an accurate and timely manner to maintain grant compliance and funding. Receive and deposit all cash donations and other funds in a timely manner. Prepare and mail acknowledgements to donors, and maintain a donor database.

Community Involvement: Represent the House of Bread and Peace at community meetings and maintain ongoing involvement in community planning efforts focused on poverty and homelessness. Communicate with community-at-large through newsletter, news releases, speaking engagements, social media, etc., to promote awareness and understanding of the HBP mission and services. Attend and participate in the Evansville Coordinated Entry program.

Resident Services: Maintain current information on bed bugs, COVID 19, and any other community health issues affecting residential facilities to ensure the safety and well-being of staff and residents. Purchase food, supplies, and household items as needed for the House. Greet new residents cordially, accepting each individual for themselves, regardless of background or prior personal history. Perform intakes of new residents while identifying and prioritizing needs. Perform drug screens as needed. Conduct periodic room searches. Assign tasks and monitor those doing various types of community service. Maintain resident confidentiality.

Job Description - Night Supervisor

Issued: November 3, 2021

Duties: Supervise operations of the House, 3-4 nights per week, reporting to the House Manager.

Environment: Emergency shelter for single women and women with children. Provides shelter and basic needs for 18-25 residents.

Qualifications:

  • Written and verbal communications skills.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Customer service skills.

  • Driver’s license and reliable transportation.

  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods, to climb stairs, and to carry items pertaining to the position.

Salary: $75.00 per night, 8-10 hours may vary.

Position Responsibilities:

Supervision: Secure the House for the night, including locking doors and shielding windows.  Enforce curfew rules and other House rules.  Monitor resident behavior. 

House Management: Monitor activity in the House during the night.  Sanitize common areas to comply with Covid-19 direction from the CDC.  Run laundry, including bedding and donated clothing.  Assist with minor housekeeping tasks as assigned by the House Manager.  

Resident Services: Answer telephone and doorbell as needed.  Contact emergency services or assist in arranging resident transportation in case of an emergency. Maintain resident confidentiality.

Duties: Reception and clerical support for the House of Bread and Peace, Inc., reporting to the Shelter Director.

Environment: Emergency shelter for single women and women with children. Provides shelter and basic needs for 18-25 residents.

Qualifications:

  • Written and verbal communications skills.

  • Customer service skills.

  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Driver’s license and reliable transportation.

  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods, to climb stairs, and to carry items pertaining to the position.

Salary: Parttime, $10.00 per hour, 20 hours per week.

Position Responsibilities:

House Management: Answer telephone calls.  Forward calls or take messages as needed.  Welcome visitors and receive donations of food, clothing and supplies.  Process donations per House rules.  

Data Processing: Receive, sort and deliver mail.  Process cash donations per House rules.  Prepare donor acknowledgements.  Maintain mailing list.  Assist in the preparation of correspondence and mailings.  Maintain administrative files.  

Resident Services: Assist residents as required by the Shelter Director.  Maintain resident confidentiality.
